| (WASHINGTON) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will host a Members’ luncheon this Wednesday (July 15) with Miguel Estrada, an expert on the Honduran constitution. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“It is important that we look at what happened in Honduras through the eyes of the Honduran constitution and rule of law.
“Though many were quick to label it a coup, information continues to surface that supports the position affirmed by the Honduran Attorney General, the National Congress, and the Supreme Court that Manuel Zelaya’s removal from office was, in fact, legal and constitutionally sound.
“This is especially important as the State Department has already taken steps to withhold assistance to Honduras based on the presumption that Zelaya’s ouster was illegal.
“We cannot allow political rhetoric to win over legal truths.”
Note: Mr. Estrada, a native of Honduras, is an expert on the Honduran constitution and was a member of the official U.S. delegation to Mr. Zelaya’s inauguration in 2006. Estrada was nominated by President George W. Bush to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 2001.
The luncheon will be held this Wednesday (July 15) at 1:00 p.m. in 2255 Rayburn. Press availability before and after the briefing.
