| (WASHINGTON) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, commented today on Ecuador’s plans to create local revolutionary committees reminiscent of those used by the Castro regime in Cuba. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“Inaugurated to his second term just this week, Rafael Correa is wasting no time in his ongoing push to implement the Chavez and Castro model in Ecuador.
“First used by the Castro regime in Cuba, then by Ortega in Nicaragua and Chavez in Venezuela, these committees are used to intimidate and spy on anyone who poses an obstacle to their drive towards unlimited power.
“The United States must make every effort to support those seeking to prevent Ecuador and other nations of the Hemisphere from joining the circle of oppression and reversing the democratic successes of the last decades.”
