Ros-Lehtinen Says Discovery of Secret Iranian Nuclear Facility

Underscores Immediate Need for ‘Painful’ Sanctions

Criticizes G-8 self-imposed 3 month delay for new sanctions

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said today that the reported discovery of a covert Iranian nuclear facility in Qom should prompt the immediate implementation of severe sanctions against the Iranian regime.  Statement of Ros-Lehtinen:

“The revelation that Iran is building a second secret uranium-enrichment plant is the strongest evidence yet that the radical regime in Tehran is racing toward a nuclear weapon.

“For more than a decade, Iran has deceived international inspectors in a game of cat-and-mouse while it built its nuclear infrastructure without ever breaking stride.

“Yet, just yesterday, it was announced that the G-8 wants to give Iran until the end of the year before considering new sanctions.

“What else are we waiting for?  Iran’s detonation of its first nuclear device?

“The U.S. and other countries must immediately impose crippling sanctions on the Iranian regime, including cutting off Iran’s imports of gasoline.

“The world cannot stand by and watch the nightmare of a nuclear-armed Iran become reality.”
