| (WASHINGTON) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, commented today on her trip earlier this week to Honduras, where she met with officials of the constitutional democratic Honduran government, including President Roberto Micheletti, as well as religious leaders, civil society representatives, and Americans living in Honduras. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“During my visit to Honduras this week, one message was resoundingly clear: the Honduran people do not want Manuel Zelaya back in office and they do not want outside actors undermining their democracy and the rule of law.
“The U.S. has clung to a Zelaya-centric approach which undercuts critical U.S. security interests and threatens to jeopardize the longstanding close ties we share with the Honduran people.
“It is time for the United States, the OAS, and others to stand with the Honduran people and publicly support free, fair, transparent presidential elections in Honduras in November of this year."
Note: Ros-Lehtinen returned yesterday from a fact-finding mission to Honduras. Tonight, she will deliver a special address on the House Floor to share her findings and express support for the upcoming elections in Honduras.
Ros-Lehtinen is the author of H. Res. 749, which calls for the U.S. to recognize and support free, fair, and transparent elections in Honduras.
