| (WASHINGTON) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will receive the Dante Fascell Award tonight at the Inter-American Foundation’s 40th Anniversary event. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“From the Soviet Union to Cuba and Nicaragua; from Europe to Africa and Asia, Congressman Fascell was a sincere ally in the fight for democracy, freedom and human rights around the world.
“In my efforts in defense of those who are oppressed and denied their fundamental freedoms; in confronting the sinister schemes and political bullying of tyrants like Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro, I bear in mind the example set by Dante Fascell.
“I am humbled and honored to receive this award, named after my colleague and friend – an extraordinary man who was unwavering in his commitment to democratic ideals.”
