Ros-Lehtinen to Meet with Hungarian Ambassador to U.S.

(WASHINGTON) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will meet later today with His Excellency Bela Szombati, the Ambassador of Hungary to the United States.  Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“With our mutual struggle against Soviet Communism never to be forgotten, the American and Hungarian people share a warm alliance bolstered by our historic commitment to freedom and democracy.

“It was not long ago that the Hungarian people suffered under the crushing yoke of Soviet totalitarianism.  Budapest’s active support for those seeking freedom in Cuba indeed illustrates that Hungary has not forgotten its own past sufferings at the hands of Communism, and will not put freedom and human rights on the backburner of its foreign policy.

“Defense against common threats is also a lynchpin of the NATO Alliance, and as NATO allies, both the United States and Hungary must remain on guard against security threats posed by extremism or aggression.

“I look forward to discussing how the U.S. and Hungary can further strengthen our alliance to advance mutual security interests and the cause of freedom.”
