| (WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, commented on this morning’s announcement by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary R. Clinton of a new U.S. approach towards Sudan which includes offers of incentives. Statement of Ros-Lehtinen:
“It is lamentable to see that, once again, the U.S. approach to murderous regimes such as the one in Sudan is to offer incentives and engagement in the hope that it will entice them to change their ways.
“This is a perversion of justice. Incentives will only be interpreted by the Sudanese regime as weakness and a lack of commitment by the U.S.
“The unthinkable crimes against humanity perpetrated by Bashir in Darfur, in Southern Sudan, and beyond prove that the Sudanese regime is not a partner for peace and never will be.
“U.S. policy towards Sudan must outline a plan for even stronger sanctions against those responsible for ongoing atrocities. The victims of genocide in Darfur are looking to the United States for decisive leadership. Now is not the time for dithering.”
