(WASHINGTON) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and U.S. Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL) will host a Members’ briefing TOMORROW, Wednesday, October 21st at 1:00 p.m. in H-137 of the Capitol with members of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Honduras and another Members’ briefing on Wednesday, October 28th with U.S. business leaders living in Honduras. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“Despite a stupefying lack of U.S. support, the democratic institutions of Honduras are moving forward with a transparent and constitutional electoral process that began long before Manuel Zelaya’s removal from office, and has not wavered in the months since.
“Rather than seeking to undermine the legitimacy of the November elections, the U.S. should be commending the people of Honduras for their commitment to such an invaluable tenet of the democratic process.
“U.S. policy is having a real and detrimental impact on the interests of U.S. citizens living in Honduras. It is time we listen to the American people and what is best for us, rather than catering to the needs and will of nefarious regional leaders.”
Note: The delegation from the Honduran Supreme Electoral Tribunal will include its President, Mr. Jose Saul Escobar Andrade, and his fellow magistrates, Enrique Ortez Sequeira, and David Andres Matamoros Batson.
Background: Ros-Lehtinen is the author of H. Res. 749, which Mr. Diaz-Balart has co-sponsored, and which calls for the U.S. to recognize and support free, fair, and transparent elections in Honduras.
