| (WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, tonight will speak on the House floor to call on the U.S. to recognize and support free, fair, and transparent elections in Honduras. Statement of Ros-Lehtinen:
“Since when does the U.S. not support free, fair, transparent and constitutionally-mandated elections? It makes no sense that the U.S. would side with Manuel Zelaya and his ALBA buddies at the expense of democracy and the rule of law.
“The United States must not continue to play wingman to tyrants who dismiss fundamental civil liberties and forsake constitutional commitments.
“No matter what one thinks about Zelaya’s removal from office, free and fair elections should be something we can all unite behind.”
Note: Ranking Member Ros-Lehtinen and Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL) will host a Members’ briefing TOMORROW, Wednesday, October 21 with members of the Honduran Supreme Electoral Tribunal to discuss the upcoming presidential elections. Tomorrow’s briefing will take place at 1:00 p.m. in H-137, the Capitol.
Ros-Lehtinen is the author of H. Res. 749, which calls for the U.S. to recognize and support free, fair, and transparent elections in Honduras.
