| (WASHINGTON) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today introduced House Resolution 867, which expresses Congressional support for Israel and opposition to any consideration or endorsement of the “Report of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict,” commonly referred to as the “Goldstone Report.” Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“This is certainly not the first time that the UN has been hijacked to spread hate and lies against the Jewish State. But posing an even greater danger than the UN’s usual poisonous propaganda, the Goldstone Report undermines Israel’s sovereign right to defend itself from its foes.
“Today at the UN, the rogue regimes have come after the Jewish state; who knows which democracy they will come after tomorrow? If we fail to speak up now for Israel, one day there may be no one left to speak up for us.
“The Administration and Congress must stand up for our ally Israel and deny any consideration or endorsement to this anti-freedom onslaught at the UN.”
Note: Last week, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution endorsing the Goldstone Report, condemning Israel, and encouraging other UN bodies to take action on the report. The President of the UN General Assembly has indicated that the General Assembly will consider the report before the end of the year, and the Report itself called for further action by the Security Council, the General Assembly, and the International Criminal Court, among others.
This legislation, House Resolution 867, was also cosponsored by Chairman Howard Berman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and by U.S. Representatives Dan Burton and Gary Ackerman, the Ranking Member and Chairman, respectively, of the House Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia. The resolution, among other things, also reaffirms Congressional support for the democratic, Jewish State of Israel, its security, and its right to self-defense.
