Ros-Lehtinen to Speak Tonight on Iranian Threat

 Ahead of Sanctions Legislation Markup

Will note Iran’s support for insurgents killing Americans in Afghanistan

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will speak tonight on the House floor about the totality of the threat posed by Iran to the United States.  Statement of Ros-Lehtinen:

“As the Foreign Affairs Committee considers Iran sanctions legislation this week, it is important to remember that Iran’s threat to global security, to U.S. interests, to critical allies such as Israel, and to American lives goes far beyond its nuclear program.

“For nearly three decades, Iran has been designated by the U.S. State Department as the world’s leading state sponsor of global terrorism.

“Most grievously, Tehran has provided weapons to the Taliban and is responsible for the deaths of Americans in Afghanistan

“The U.S. must stop dithering and waiting for others to do the right thing.  The U.S. must increase the pressure on the Iranian regime and impose immediate sanctions on Iran

“It is time for the U.S. to lead.  Lives, not just policies, depend on it.”

Note:   On Wednesday, October 28th, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs will be holding a mark-up of H.R. 2194, the Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act of 2009.  Ros-Lehtinen is the lead Republican co-sponsor of this legislation which enjoys the support of over 300 bipartisan co-sponsors.
