| (WASHINGTON) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and U.S. Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL) will host a Members’ briefing Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 28th with U.S. business leaders living in Honduras critical of the U.S. pro-Zelaya stance. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“During my recent visit to Honduras I was struck by the harmful effect U.S. policy is having on American interests and citizens in that country.
“This delegation will help give voice to the thousands of U.S. citizens in Honduras whose concerns are being ignored as their livelihood is threatened by the actions taken against the democratic current government of Honduras.
“The United States’ hard-line tactics against those seeking to uphold the constitution and rule of law in Honduras are hurting U.S. commercial and economic interests, and undermining regional security priorities.”
Note: Tomorrow’s briefing will take place at 1:00 p.m. in 2200 Rayburn and will be open to press.
Background: Roughly 200 U.S. companies operate in Honduras, and the U.S. is the largest principal investor, contributing almost 60% of total foreign direct investment. There are over 15,000 U.S. citizens living in Honduras, many of whom work at U.S.-owned companies or own businesses themselves.
