| (WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, applauded today’s signing of the U.S.-Colombia Defense Cooperation Agreement. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“Colombia remains one of a diminishing number of allies in the Western Hemisphere committed to working with the United States to confront the evils of narco-traffickers and extremist rebel groups.
“This agreement helps to consolidate longstanding bilateral cooperation between our two nations and further bolsters security efforts in a region that is increasingly vulnerable to anti-democratic and destabilizing forces.
“I remain fully supportive of our democratic friends in Colombia and urge my Congressional colleagues to immediately pass the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement.”
Note: The U.S.-Colombia Defense Cooperation Agreement was signed in Bogota, Colombia this morning. It does not permit the establishment of any U.S. base in Colombia or authorize an increase in the presence of U.S. military or civilian personnel in Colombia.
