| (WASHINGTON) –U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, introduced a resolution supporting free, fair, democratic and transparent elections in Honduras and calling on the Administration to recognize their legitimacy. Statement of Ros-Lehtinen:
“In November, the Honduran people will go to the polls in defense of true democracy. By withholding support for these elections absent the return of Manuel Zelaya, the U.S. is imposing prerequisites that run contrary to the rule of law and the Honduran constitution.
“Instead of discrediting these elections which have yet to take place, the U.S. and responsible nations should be working with the appropriate authorities in Honduras to ensure that the elections are free, fair, democratic and transparent.”
Note: H.Res. 749 was introduced last week with the support of 17 original co-sponsors including Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence (R-IN) and Republican Policy Committee Chairman Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI).
